IT’S A GREEN LIGHT FOR TESLA RACE CAR SERIES
Tesla’s Electric Production Car Series vehicles are poised to hit the track.
Two years after Tesla unveiled plans for an all-Tesla racing series, the idea has been given full approval by the Federation Internationale d l’Automobile (FIA).
Previously known as the Electric GT World Series, the Electric Production Car Series (EPCS) as it’s now called will see electric car manufacturers pitting their cars against each other.
The problem is, electric cars to compete in the series are scarce, so Tesla is kicking things off with its own cars.
The idea must have legs because the FIA (the body that supervises Formula One and Formula E) has given its approval even though the series has a dearth of teams and cars.
When it does launch, the series will race on major circuits mimicking the F1 competition. The first race should kick off in late 2018, but venues and teams have still to be locked in.
The cars we’ll see speeding around the grid will be Tesla P100Ds tweaked to endure and survive the rigours of racing.
The Electric racing car competition is becoming crowded and now includes Formula E. A taste of what’s to come is the launch of the amazing Gen2 Formula E car profiled here recently at GadgetNET.
Jaguar is backing Formula E using 20 of its I-Pace electric SUVs to compete against each other in a support race series. The races are held at Pikes Peak, Isle of Man and fields will also compete at a bundle of other places globally.
Tesla faces some major hurdles to get its cars race ready. It has to jettison weight, gut the interiors and find room on the rear for a spoiler.
These glitches will be sorted out over time, and by then we could look forward to EPCS races with the field comprising the Aston Martin RapidE, the Jaguar I-Pace and Porsche’s Mission E.
Bring it on, we say.
