SNEAKERS FOR PLAYSTATION FANATICS
When Nike and Sony collaborated to deliver the latest version of the PG-2 sneaker to the world, they knew they were backing a winner.
You could take it to the bank that a sneaker finished in PlayStation colours with logos illuminating to mimic the consoles power light, would be a global attention grabber.
Nike doesn’t miss out. The brand’s incredibly large logo is etched on the outside of the PG-2’s heel.
Sony does pretty well also with well lit, pulsating brandings front and centre on the PG-2.
If you’re lucky enough to see a pair strolling towards you, the first things you’ll see are the PlayStation logo, and the famous PS Triangle emboldened on the top of the left and right sneaker tongues. Both are so bright; they’ll hit you between the eyes.
Damn, the PlayStation Triangle is even emblazoned across the PG-2’s heels.
If you get the idea these sneakers promote the Sony and Nike brands, you’re on the money. But there’s more: these self-lacing masterpieces of shoe design art were inspired by NBA star, Paul George.
And yes, his branding on the PG-2s is unmissable as well.
Some describe the latest PG-2 as “beautiful.” Others see the PG-2 as positively “Bling land.”
Either way, strong reactions are exactly what Nike and Sony are hoping for.
As for Paul George’s input, the myth can be stronger than the truth. But legend has it that when Nike asked him for his input on a new sneaker, George was front and centre.
After chatting with the famous designer, Tony Hardman, he provided a sketch of a pair of sneakers sporting forefoot straps.
A bemused Hardman took it all on board, and a few years later George’s low-cut design along with Nike features such as Flywire and Zoom Air cushioning, became a commercial reality. So much so, the PG1 was a global smash hit.
Be that as it may, encouraged by the PG1’s success, Nike milked it after consulting George again. Who wouldn’t?
The evolution of the PG-1 to PG-2 involved the addition of natural materials but no strap. A regular shoe tongue and outstanding comfort was the PG-2 mantra.
Kudos has to be given to Nike who spent a motza designing hi-tech features into the PG-2.
Hardman came up with the stunning idea to use flywire cables in the forefoot, and these are bolstered within a textile shell. The original fore strap was liquidated and replaced by “dynamic wings.”
The new PG-2 is colourful because George loves video games. So the sneaker has two different swoosh colours, coloured eyelets, and a midsole speckle.
The PG-2 will be released overseas on Feb 10 with a US$110 price tag. The likely horde of buyers queuing up for a pair will find their shoe’s left heel carries a PlayStation Network barcode.
Why for? All the better to get a free Paul George PS4 theme, of course.
