VINYL HATERS GONNA LOVE THIS

The ongoing feud between analog and digital extremists just got a little blurry.

Take a vinyl record, warp it into a horn shape and bang a loudspeaker, amplifier, and Bluetooth receiver behind it. You now have the “Vintage Vinyl Bluetooth Speaker” as advertised currently on crowdfunding site, Kickstarter.

Using a vinyl record to reproduce digital sound may even satisfy some in some sacrificial way perhaps?

But no, despite the question apparently being asked, you can’t drop the needle on these records. But they’ll play your entire digital music collection in analog-inspired style.

Through progressive prototyping, we have selected some great internal components to ensure the best acoustic response, including a top-of-the-line coaxial speaker driver by a major manufacturer.

It uses a 4” coaxial driver coupled with a 12" diameter waveguide that is 3.875" deep for a mono output that certainly isn’t likely to be the best sounding Bluetooth speaker around. Nonetheless, it is pretty cool in a retro kind of way.

Project organisers, UncommonGoods, have raised $9,221 of their $10,000 USD goal with 23 days remaining. The ‘Vintage Vinyl Bluetooth Speaker’ already has 56 backers (at time of writing) that either just loved the idea, simply paid for the analogue sacrifice, or maybe both? You can get yours for $185 USD, but sadly they don't seem to ship outside U.S.

For more information visit the Kickstarter page.
